James Gunn shares first image of David Corenswet in Superman suit

In 2025, you will believe a man can … put his red boots on? David Corenswet is suiting up as the next Man of Steel in a first-look image of the actor in the Superman costume. On his Instagram account, James Gunn posted Corenswet putting on Superman’s trademark red boots. Gunn added that the photo was “taken on set by Jess Miglio and was entirely in-camera.”

Corenswet was cast in the highly coveted role of Clark Kent/Superman in June 2023. Corenswet takes over for Henry Cavill, the actor who last played Superman on the big screen in the DC Extended Universe.

Originally titled Superman: Legacy, Gunn dropped the subtitle in February 2024, electing to name the film Superman. The rebooted Superman series kicks off Gunn’s new DC Universe as the first movie of the Chapter One: Gods and Monsters phase.

Besides Corenswet, Superman’s ensemble includes Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, Neva Howell as Martha Kent, Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

Gunn is writing and directing Superman. It’s the first DC film directed by Gunn since becoming co-chairmen and co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, who will produce for Warner Bros. Pictures. Filming on Superman is currently underway and should last until August 2024.

Superman’s logline reads: “Clark Kent, a reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”

Superman soars into theaters on July 11, 2025.

Well, it's official: James Gunn will direct the first movie in Warner Bros. Discovery's ambitious and aggressive reboot of the DC universe, Superman: Legacy. While not a surprise, the announcement is a clear signal that Gunn is fully invested in casting away the DCEU and putting forth his vision of a cinematic universe that involves a radically different version of the Man of Steel.

But what, precisely, will audiences see in Superman: Legacy? At this point, moviegoers only know what -- and who -- will not be in it: Henry Cavill, any ties to the DCEU, and a cynical and violent vision like what Zach Snyder had put forth in 2013's Man of Steel. While Gunn's film is still being written and has yet to be cast, it's the perfect time to wonder what the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director should include in his Superman reboot.

James Gunn’s Batman can bridge the gap from movies to gaming

James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-CEOs of DC Studios, recently unveiled the initial slate for the DCU's upcoming first phase, er, chapter, and with it came the answer to Batman's interconnected cinematic future in the form of an upcoming film called The Brave and the Bold. This announcement, titled "Chapter I: Gods and Monsters," revealed that Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's crime-noir rendition of the superhero would fall under the DC Elseworlds banner, and will include the upcoming sequel The Batman Part II.

But Gunn also made a point to involve the DCU and Elseworlds labels in the video game industry, which poses an exciting potential proposition for how this new Dark Knight's world could be expanded on more than one front. The Brave and the Bold is set to introduce an established Bruce Wayne in this universe -- along with Damian Wayne as his Robin -- which paves the way for plenty of prequel storytelling opportunities for this Batman in the gaming world.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn announced that he is writing and producing an HBO Max animated series about the superhero team, the Creature Commandos. This show is one of the many projects that Gunn revealed will be part of the first chapter of his reboot of the DC Universe. When speaking about the series, Gunn said that DC would "have characters move into animation, out of animation, usually having the same actor play their voice as who plays them in live-action," meaning audiences could see these heroes crossover into live-action in the future.

The Creature Commandos are an unusual choice for a superhero series, given their less-than-notable status in the comics world. Despite this, Gunn has surprised audiences before by taking D-list characters Peacemaker and the Guardians of the Galaxy and making them stars overnight. The team also fits with the theme of the DCU's first chapter, which is aptly titled "Gods and Monsters." Even so, it wouldn't hurt to know more about this odd batch of heroes before they roll out onto HBO Max.
